AFL football is unique to Australia. Inviting kids from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds to play footy in your local community is a great way of saying welcome to our country.
But playing a brand new sport in a new country can be a bit daunting for kids and their families who haven’t experienced it before. The costs of uniforms, boots, training equipment and fees can be high and we don’t think that this should stop kids from getting involved.
This is why ‘Welcome to Australia’ and the ‘AFL Multicultural Program’ are joining forces to help local clubs to engage kids to play.
We are providing this fundraising platform to help clubs raise money to make this happen. All donations are fully tax-deductible!
Involve your Club. If you are keen to welcome kids to your community email [email protected] and click the below “create your own” button to get your own page happening.

We are raising money for uniforms, footy boots, training equipment and membership fees. These may seem like small things. But giving someone the ability to play football can help them find community, hope and belonging.

Emdadul Haque was one of the recruits to the ‘Mayne Tigers’ AFL club in Brisbane, 2015. He won runner-up best and fairest for the association… in his first year of football! He and his family fled Bangladesh in 2002. Here is his story!
“I remember that Bangladesh is a lovely place. We lived in a house that was made of tin but most of the houses were grass or straw or wooden. We went to school to learn, there was no lunchtime or playtime and at the end of the day we would be given six biscuits each to eat on the way home. We would sit on the ground and write with chalk on the blackboard. On the way home after school we would collect firewood. There were elephants and tigers in the forest so we would have a knife to protect ourselves.
In Bangladesh there was a war between our country and Burma and there was a lot of fighting so we were no longer safe. When we arrived in Australia I could not speak English but now I speak English very well and can now speak six different languages.
When I grow up I want to work in technology or be an AFL footballer as I am very fast. The Mayne Tigers AFL team sponsored me into the club and I am now a part of the team and I am having a lot of fun. When I first came to Australia I was shy and had no friends but now I know that people are proud of me and I have many friends.
Thank you Australia for welcoming my family to our new home. We are very lucky and love it here very much.
Today I am an Australian and this is a wonderful country that I live in.”
